چکیده

The Correspondence model of base-reduplicant identity (McCarthy & Prince 1995, to appear) makes the prediction that any kind of segmental phonological process may result in any of these situations through ranking of phonological constraints with faithfulness constraints on the input and output and the basereduplicant relationship. Normal application arises when base-reduplicant faithfulness constraints are ranked lower than input-output faithfulness constraints and markedness/well-formedness constraints (2a). Underapplication and overapplication arise when constraints on base-reduplicant faithfulness are ranked above such constraints, as shown in (2b,c) from Kager (to appear) based on McCarthy & Prince (to appear):

Reduplication in Persian Language and Literature

The Reduplications are made by repeating part of the base. The repeated part does not make sense and will never be used alone and is just popular in spoken language. In recent times, they have been used in some texts of poetry and prose, in particular, in stories written in vernacular. This research, with a historical approach, and with an analytical-explanatory method, examines the information...

Reducing Articulatory Effort in Non-word Tokens

SUMMARY English Speech sounds in high-frequency words are more likely to be reduced than speech sounds in low-frequency words, due to greater application of phonological processes in highly frequent words. Here, the tendency of Danish speakers to lenite intervocalic /t d/ in non-words was tested in different morphological environments, to examine whether this effect also applies to new words af...

A unified analysis of classifiers and reduplication across nominal and verbal domains∗

This paper discusses the use of classifiers and reduplication in Cantonese. I propose a unified account for the syntax-semantics of both nouns and verbs, based on two functional layers: individuation and quantification. I demonstrate an abstract semantics that handles the interaction between classifiers and reduplication without reference to syntactic categories. Quantification (reduplication) ...

Acquisition of Sociolinguistic Variation: Acoustic Characteristics of s-lenition in the Speech of Spanish-speaking Children

S-lenition is wide-spread in many dialects of Spanish, including Spanish spoken in the Caribbean region, coastal Mexico, Central America (but not in Costa Rica and Guatemala), and the Pacific coast of Colombia, Ecuador, coastal Peru, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and much of Argentina (Lipski, 1994). Spanish s-lenition is a phonological process that weakens both morphological /-s/ (plural marker /-...

Four Types of Reduplication in the Cha’palaa Language of Ecuador

The Cha’palaa language of northwestern Ecuador is characterized by the relatively high functional load it places on reduplication; it applies a variety of distinct types of reduplication across different word classes and construction types. This paper describes four major types of reduplication in Cha’palaa: full and partial repetition of ideophones (not a fully grammaticalized reduplication ty...
